Discovering New Colors in Art through Lancaster’s Landscapes

New surroundings, new inspiration.

Have you ever found yourself in a new surrounding and realized that the change in landscape, atmosphere, or even the colors around you began to seep into your own life and perspectives, subtly altering the way you see the world? When I moved to Lancaster, Pennsylvania, I didn't expect the natural beauty to shift my artistic focus, but here we are.

The Pull Towards a Different Palette

For years, I've found comfort in the natural, earthy colors that have always felt like a gentle hug to the soul. But recently, something shifted within me. A craving for color. Seeking a way to marry neutral earthy tones with a vibrant saturated palette is a challenge worth pursuing. My love for neutrals will always persist and is the foundation for my work but I’m excited to incorporate vibrant pops of color within this work.

The Colors of Farmland

One of the best parts about living in Lancaster is the endless expanse of beautiful farmland. Every morning I take walks with my daughter along a serene river path. These walks have become more than just a daily routine; they're my sanctuary. The farmlands speak in shades of greens and yellows, colors I now find myself reaching for more often in my artwork.

I haven’t snapped enough photos of the farmlands yet—sometimes beauty simply takes your breath away, doesn't it? But I promise to share these landscapes with you in the coming weeks.

The Wildflowers: Color-Driven Inspirations

Flowers have always been fascinating, but here they're not just roadside attractions; they're like little treasure chests full of color and detail. Each petal is an artist's dream, and my trips to the local markets have become mini field trips for my artistic soul.

Local Produce: Nature's Color Wheel

But it's not just about the flowers and fields. I've always enjoyed cooking, and Lancaster’s local produce has also found its way into my art. From vibrant beets to golden corn, each trip to the farmers' market is like a visit to an organic color wheel.

Your Turn: Engage with Your Surroundings

Feeling inspired? I challenge you to find your own unexpected colors in your environment. Maybe it’s the rusty red of an old barn or the deep blue of a tranquil lake. Capture these tones with your camera, by sketching, or simply by soaking in the beauty.

Share your unexpected color stories with me on Instagram by tagging me @mollysuppleeart. Let's inspire each other and celebrate the beautiful colors that are right in front of us, waiting to be discovered!
